Originally we attempted to make a piece of music for the viking ships setting sail in the Love story. But Viking flutes were made of bones, such as the leg bones of cows, deer, sheep or from large birds. Most had three holes in them, but some had up to seven.

There was an instrument; the mysterious Skalmejen dated back to the 11th century, but it is unclear how it was used. There is some speculation that it was part of a bagpipe or a type of hornpipe with a mouthpiece added to it. So i was trying to create a guitar sound with those qualities in mind.

But in the end the guitar sound turned out to be too much like an ancient middle eastern reed instrument, more like the Jujuka trumpets. So it didn't quite match the original idea. It's a massive piece of music though ,and with the moon rising in the hot clear desert tonight, well, I thought.....let the damn trumpets out!.

A side of the Collective that tickles my special area. This album's mission statement, if you will, is a more earthly delivery. The delightful approach towards the early 70's-like Grateful Dead / New Riders style with tremendous pedal steel, patient, textured keyboards, incredible secondary guitar juxtapositions, well played electric mando, violin and other exotic instruments.
